Charlotte’s It Looks Sad. named their latest release on North Carolina label Tiny Engines “Kaiju,” a Japanese term for a monster. (Think Godzilla.) Indeed, their wild, oversized sound is just unleashed enough to fit the epithet; relaxed, open vocals collide with powerful drumming and guitars that resonate through beautiful arpeggios. Their Pitchfork-acclaimed tune “Radical” was written on a whim during practice as they nervously prepared to open for clear inspirations Cursive. Instead of running from the monster of intimidation, they embrace the feeling of lingering in uncertainty. Their rock songs warble and stutter and occasionally explode, keeping the listener slightly on edge and wondering what the monster might do next.
