Molly Burch

Austin, TX

On her striking 2017 debut, Please Be Mine, the Austin via Asheville singer Molly Burch makes no effort to hide her intentions, just in case the title wasn’t transparent enough. On wistful opener, “Downhearted,” Burch sings, “I remember recently/That I’ve lost a few of my things/My mind, my heart, my good intentions/And most everything.” Her voice floats gently over reverberating guitars, propelled by an unfussy rhythm. Throughout the rest of the album, the simple arrangements and classic melodies are as timeless as Burch’s broken but hopeful heart, with her voice—a cross of ’50s pop singers and Patsy Cline—conjuring a smoky nightclub.
