Hopscotch announces free Music Tapes, Depressed Buttons show

Submitted on Nov 18, 2011

Wristbands for Hopscotch 2012 (Sept. 6–8) go on sale Thursday, Dec. 1, at 10 a.m. We'll announce more details about the sale next week.

To coincide with the sale, we're throwing a party—a big holiday dance party. On December 1, Hopscotch will take over Tir na nOg’s weekly Thursday showcase, Local Beer Local Band, and go a little bit wild with it. We’ll open at 8 p.m. with a set by The Music Tapes, the Merge Records act led by former Neutral Milk Hotel member and seasonal caroler Julian Koster. This show will anchor The Music Tapes’ 15-day tour of Christmas carols and folk songs that leads them up and down the East Coast nearly every winter. And in the spirit of the evening, two of our favorite new Triangle acts—The Toddlers and TOW3RS—will follow with sets of their own. We then invite you to dance: Mad Decent’s Depressed Buttons build perfect electronic sprawls with a mix of pop melodies, wild samples and huge beats. You might even recognize these fellows as three-fifths of The Faint, a band that helped teach indie kids to dance a decade ago. They'll close the night.

We’re throwing this free party for a few reasons: Again, tickets to Hopscotch go on sale Thursday, Dec. 1. We’re also taking this opportunity to help a family that’s helped Hopscotch. Dan Melchior and Letha Rodman Melchior played the first night of the second Hopscotch in September. For the last year and a half, Letha has been battling cancer. (For more on her plight, visit melchiorfund.blogspot.com.) On December 1, the couple’s health insurance will run out, and they’ll again be faced with a $5,000 deductible. To help defray that cost, we’ll hold a raffle at Tir na nOg, where each $1 ticket you buy not only aids the Melchiors but also earns you another chance to win a Hopscotch 2012 VIP ticket. At the end of the night, we'll pull a raffle ticket, and the winner walks away with a VIP ticket.

Being a VIP for $1 while helping a great artistic family in need, all while attending a free show with four awesome bands? We think that’s a pretty great start to the season of giving.

This holiday kick-off is sponsored by Hopscotch, Tir na nOg and Lonerider Brewing Co.
