Two free films, and a guide to Hopscotch

Submitted on Sep 06, 2011

We’ve kept just a few tricks up our sleeves for this final week of Hopscotch preparation and buzz. Today, we’re pleased to announce two.

First, we will screen two excellent films inside of the Lincoln Theatre Saturday, Sept. 10, while our Rosebuds & Friends day party takes over Blount Street. At 12:30 p.m., we will show Devin DiMattia’s critically acclaimed Firewall of Sound, a look at the commercial and critical implications of file sharing. For more about DiMattia and his film, visit www.firewallofsound.com. Then, at 3 p.m., we will show The Secret to a Happy Ending: A Documentary About the Drive-By Truckers. The Truckers play Raleigh City Plaza with Guided by Voices the night before this screening, so we felt it was only appropriate to follow their set with one of the best rock films we’ve seen in a while. What’s more, filmmaker Barr Weissman will be on hand to answer any audience questions about the movie.

Seating will be provided inside of the Lincoln Theatre, and all screenings—like the day party outside—are free.

Bottega will be providing free haircuts on Blount Street outside of the Lincoln Theatre, while Poole's Ashley Christensen will be serving food to raise money for the Frankie Lemmon Foundation. Again, admission is free, and the fun starts at 11 a.m. with TONK.

Our final surprise of the day comes in tomorrow’s Independent Weekly. Last year, our guide to Hopscotch won first prize from the Association of Alternative Newsmedia for 2011 Special Sections. This year, we’ve expanded the section, which was again illustrated by Chris Williams of Plastic Flame Press. This Hopscotch guide includes several individualized itineraries and interviews, plus essays by Grayson Currin, Jeff Klingman, Craig D. Lindsey, Matt LeMay David Raposa, Brandon Soderberg and more. We’re very excited to see it tomorrow.

Reminder: Wristband distribution starts TOMORROW at the downtown Raleigh Sheraton. Details are here. Some tickets remain for our headlining shows in City Plaza on Friday and Saturday, featuring The Flaming Lips, Guided by Voices, Drive-By Truckers, Superchunk and more. Purchase them here.
