Video Premiere: Lambchop’s “Buttons”
Submitted on Aug 31, 2012
In 2009, when all the sets of Merge Records' 20th anniversary party had ended and all the rumors about Neutral Milk Hotel and The Arcade Fire performances had simply yielded to a spectacular boutique music festival, the one thing people couldn't stop talking about was Lambchop. The Nashville band had been on Merge since near the beginning, easing out one delicate record of cranky and elegant country beauty after another. But their set at XX Merge seemed very much like a reintroduction, with Kurt Wagner's soul on fire in front of a crowd of 500 or so people who hung on every word. Like a soul showman who had been fooling us all along, on that night, Wagner became a sudden superstar.
He must have been feeling it that weekend, for he took some time to record a solo acoustic version of "Buttons"—one of the anchors of one of this year's best album, Lambchop's Mr. M—in Carrboro's Friendly Barber Shop. More than three years later, we're happy to present the premiere of that footage. Lambchop will play Hopscotch Music Festival's gorgeous Fletcher Opera Theater next week, Saturday, Sept. 8. Tickets are still available here.
