EUGENE CHADBOURNE (born January 4, 1954) is an American avant-garde banjoist, guitarist, composer and vocalist. Based in Hillsborough, North Carolina, he is celebrated for blending free jazz, country, and psychedelic rock. He also played a major role in the lo-fi cassette movement.Born in Mount Vernon, New York, and raised in Boulder, Colorado, Chadbourne initially learned guitar inspired by The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix. He eventually transitioned to acoustic bottleneck blues and avant-garde jazz.His important local influences at the time included guitarist Tommy Bolin, composer George Crumb and Musique concrete pioneer Tod Dockstader.
Living in Canada in the early 1970s to avoid the Vietnam War draft, he befriended musician Anthony Braxton, who convinced him to pursue music instead of journalism. Chadbourne returned to the U.S., eventually relocating to New York City. In 1980, he moved to North Carolina to raise his family.Known for his prolific and eccentric career, Chadbourne has released a vast catalog of albums spanning jazz, noise, and country. He founded the avant-rock band Shockabilly in the 1980s and has collaborated with a wide variety of acts, including Camper Van Beethoven, John Zorn, Han Bennink, and Frank Zappa drummer Jimmy Carl Black.His extensive discography and eclectic artistic ventures—such as transcribing complex classical pieces for the banjo—have cemented his legacy as one of music's most unique underground figures
